  11. 5-6 curry leaves chopped
  12. to taste Salt
  13. as needed oil for shallow fry
  14. 2 tbsp lemon juice
  15. 4 tsp coriander leaves
  16. For fish curry
  17. 500 gms fish
  18. 1 large onion
  19. 1 large tomato
  20. 5 garlic cloves
  21. 1 inch ginger
  22. 3/4 cup grated coconut
  23. 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  24. 1/2 tsp jeera/ Cumin seeds
  25. 1/4 tsp methi ( fenugreek) Seeds
  26. 4 tsp Curry leaves
  27. 2 green chilies
  28. 1 tsp Kashmiri chili powder
  29. 1/2 tsp chili powder
  30. 1 tbsp coriander powder
  31. 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  32. 1 tbsp tamarind paste or juice from lemon size tamarind
  33. 2 tsp coriander leaves
  34. to taste Salt
  35. 5 tbsp sesame oil

Steps to make to make Kerala style Fish curry and Fish fry

  1. Clean the fish slices with turmeric powder and drain it.
  2. To marinate for fish fry : in a deep plate take all the spice powders, saunf, ginger garlic paste, chopped curry leaves and salt. To this add lemon juice and oil. Mix everything well. (Do not add water, add extra lemon juice if needed to make a paste)
  3. Take cleaned fish slices, coat well with masala. Cover and let it marinate for an hour.
  4. To prepare fish curry : take roughly chopped onion, garlic and ginger in a mixer jar. Grind to a coarse paste without adding water. Take grated coconut in mixer jar, grind with 3/4 cup water. Squeeze out thick coconut milk approximately 3/4 cup. Grind residue with more water and squeeze out thin coconut milk approximately 2 cups.
  5. In a kadai heat sesame oil. Add in mustard, jeera and methi seeds. Add in onion paste and saute. Add chopped green chili, curry leaves and saute until onion paste are golden.
  6. Take roughly chopped tomatoes, grind to a coarse paste and add it to the kadai. Saute until oil oozes out.
  7. Add in spice powders and saute for a minute.
  8. Add in tamarind paste, salt, thin coconut milk. Mix and let it boil.
  9. When it comes to a boil, add cleaned fish pieces. Cover and cook for 10 mins.
  10. Add thick coconut milk and swirl the kadai so not to break the fish pieces. Let it boil for 2 mins on low flame. Garnish with coriander leaves and switch off the flame. Allow the fish curry to rest for 1 or 2 hours which makes the curry and fish more tasty.
  11. Fish curry is ready to be served.
  12. To shallow fry the marinated fish slices. Heat oil in a pan and place the fish slices and cook for 4-5 mins on each side.
  13. Garnish fish fry with chopped coriander leaves. Serve with onion rings and lemon.
  14. Serve Kerala style fish curry and fish fry with steamed rice.
